Powered Paraglider Tandem Operations

Notes and links on the status of Tandem Training

In recognition of the value of two-place training, the USPPA has asked for and received an exemption to the solo-only limitation of FAR part 103. Not surprisingly, it comes with many limitation.

Go here for the complete USPPA tandem program and exemption.

Go here for the answer to "So you wanna be a tandem pilot?"

Go here to read about using wheels which, unfortunately, is not allowed, in any form, by any organization for powered flying under FAR 103.

Taking Up Passengers

There is no allowance in the regulations for recreational tandems. The FAA granted the exemption for the purpose of training only so any other use risks serious liability should anything happen, let alone the always present possibility of FAA fines and equipment confiscation, unlikely thought that may be.

There is a way to take up passengers but the craft must be certified as a Light Sport Aircraft and the pilot must be a certified Sport Pilot. There are presently no sport pilot certified craft that could properly be called powered paragliders. There are some wheeled craft that pilots have gone through getting certified as Experimental Light Sport.
