Process and Documents For Ratings & Tandems

These are the documents and processes required for any new rating application. Your help is greatly appreciated by our volunteers! Thanks so much for all you do to make our sport better through training and adherence to safe practices.

Rating Application | Membership App | Waiver

All Ratings, Process & Forms:

The syllabus must be used and completed (initialed front page) for all ratings. This helps the student know that complete training was received and provides significant liability protection for the instructor.

You can do the rating application either Via Paper or Online. There is no charge to process rating applications but online is far more likely to be quicker and more accurate. Instructors have a special page for administering their ratings given.

Here is the complete solo ratings program, including instructor (PDF).

Tandem Exemption Forms (And Wheels)

Tandem pilots must carry their USPPA rating card showing their tandem rating and a copy of USPPA's FAA Exemption 9751 and #9751A with them at all times when doing tandems. These must be presented, on request, to an FAA official.

Note that tandems can only be done foot-launched. There has been some confusion because of publications by another organization but this has now been clarified by the FAA. Go here to see this clarification from the FAA.

For Instructors: Giving a Rating

This is the process for a USPPA Instructor to give a PPG1 through PPG3 Rating:

1. Ensure the student meets all requirements, has passed the tests (PPG1 and PPG2 are online) with a minimum of 80% and correct any mistakes. You and the student must feel confident that the student could reasonably demonstrate the skills of his rating anytime.

2. You and your student sign and date the Syllabus first page (sample at right) attesting that you've both gone through the syllabus. Get this to us by:

  a) fax using the fax number on our home page,
  b) take a picture of it and send to theUSPPA@gmail.com.
  c) snail mail it to the address on our home page.
  d) include the image when submitting an online rating application as described in the next step.

3. Ensure student is a current USPPA member so his name is in the database.

4. Log into the members section. You have an option to "Add New Rating" and "Manage Student Ratings". Select "Add New Rating" and follow this instructions. You'll be allowed to upload the syllabus signature page from your computer. Press submit and you're done!

Optionally you can print the current rating application, fill out and give the student his temporary ratings card.

And the student may be eligible to receive a training incentive reimbursement.

Thanks! You are the backbone of making this sport more enjoyable and safe for all concerned.
