Alan Chuculate

Below are some pictures that include many personal high points in my life. Alan had a lot of influence in many ways. I really learned soaring during the many trips out to San Diego where he and his wife, Mary, took me in with the widest of welcomes and went about to introduce me to various soaring sites, techniques and people. I learned paraglider kiting from Alan. And I mean really learned! First he showed me what was possible then he he motivated me to learn it.

The Memorial PDF was displayed during the service held out at Torrey Pines. Click on the pictures to view them full size.

Alan Chuculate Memorialized

Nov 6, 2005

Long time pilot Alan Chuculate, sport promoter, 1st USPPA president, friend and much more was memorialized Friday afternoon at 2pm. Probably 200 pilots, family, friends, and dancers came to Torrey Pines Gliderport near San Diego to show their respect and share stories about Alan's influence on their lives.

His friend from childhood,  Jim Eskildsen, took off in perfect soaring weather, flew for a few moments, then spread Alan's ashes into the lift. Alan was part Cherokee and a traditional song was offered up by a full-blooded Cherokee who came out from North Carolina.

A celebration of his life followed at their home and a video, created by Phil Russman and Thad Spencer was shown.

His wife, Mary Hobson, has asked that, instead of flowers, any donations be made to the Hang Glider Foundation Site Preservation fund. Contributions will be matched by the US Hang Glider Association. That address is:
