Electric Paramotor Flies

It has no gas, no muffler and only the minimal noise from a spinning prop. The quiet flyer took wing last week in Canada, piloted by its designer, Csaba Lemak. More... That 18 minute first flight was, by far, the longest ever made by an electric paramotor. And it could have been longer but he wanted to take measurements between several short flights. All were taken on the same battery charge, adding up to over 35 minutes of flight time, including at least 3 takeoffs and landings.

Csaba has been an avid and accomplished Radio Control modeler for years with a focus on large electric aircraft. After taking up paramotoring, he wanted to take his passion for electric thrust to his new hobby and consulted with good friend Patrick Mackenzie. Mackenzie agreed that it should be possible and provided invaluable assistance in making it happen.

Improvements in motors and batteries, enjoyed mostly by the R/C community, have been used extensively but the challenges loom large. Complexities stemming from heat, battery safety, controller issues and others have required a serious investment in time and money. Several very expensive motors and controllers were burned up in the process before the systems were dialed in but the prospects are now extremely promising.

We talked with Mr. Lemak on June 15 and he says that new battery technology and other improvements will both increase the endurance and reduce the cost. He says that a commercial version could be available by next spring. 

The prototype drive train is mounted on a Walkerjet frame and was flown under an Eden 3. The ready-to-fly weight was 22 Kg. We'll have more details as they come available. Pictures and other news about the status of developments for electric paramotors is www.ElectricPPG.com.
