The Shatner Christening

Aug 30, 2002

Joliet, IL

While it was originally named for it's "aircraft carrier" status, the connection with Star Trek surfaces in it's mission statement: "Seeking New Sites and New Heights". So it was with pleasure I welcomed William Shatner to take a ride in it.

Of course it was due to simply being available and could carry the entourage, but I won't be picky as to reason.

Before boarding he graciously obliged my request for an autograph. The signature now adorns the entrance just below the "Enterprise" decal.

We then rode over to where Ellie (an Enstrom F28A) rested for our trip to the practice field. While flying over, he put some stick time on the helicopter and did a good job. Turns out he's got his private license and has soloed a Pitts Special Aerobatic airplane.

Once at the practice field, he boned up on some rusty kiting skills, making dramatic improvement in the one hour available. It was obvious from the start that this was a man wanting to have fun.

It appears he succeeded.
