Quincy PPG & PPC Event

by Jeff Steinkamp, May 22, 2009

The 11th Annual Tri-State Ultralight Fly In was held on May 1, 2, 3, 2009 at Baldwin Field (UIN), Quincy Regional Airport, Quincy, IL.  The event attracted 5 powered parachute pilots and 7 powered paraglider pilots.  The powered paraglider pilots in attendance were Cindy and Phil Adkison, Waterford, MI; Andrey Azarskov, St. Louis, MO; Ivan Kondanrov, St Louis, MO; Jiri Sindler, St. Louis, MO; Mike Otten, Cedar Rapids, IA; and Jeff Steinkamp, Quincy, IL.

Just before sunset on Friday evening the weather cleared and the winds calmed down enough for Mike Otten to be the first one in the air.  Saturday morning was good flying with both powered parachutes and powered paragliders taking advantage of the cool but calm conditions.  On Saturday afternoon many of the Fly In pilots and friends accepted the invitation to join the local Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter #488 and take a guided tour of the Air USA and World Aerospace Museum.  The tour included a close up look at two Russian jet fighters, an airworthy MiG-21 plus a MiG-29 that is being rebuilt and should be flying very soon.  Thanks to the EAA for allowing us to tag along and enjoy looking at these awesome aircraft.

Saturday evening was great flying with calm winds and clear weather.  Sunday morning included early flying with a convoy of powered paragliders heading toward the Mississippi River and then back to the airport for breakfast.

Thanks to Marty Stegeman, Quincy Airport Director, and the City of Quincy for supporting this event and to all the pilots that attended.  Hope to see all of you next year.
